IE is very picky about this and Firefox is not. Now change the tags to (with or without an ID or an HREF -- doesn't matter) and the code fails, giving "unknown runtime error" on IE. I believe it has to do with the fact that you're trying to replace the HTML code which fired the current line of execution. I also encountered the same issue when things worked for me in Chrome, Firefox and Safari and I was unable to get through in IE8.

I really wouldn't have guessed this and you saved me a lot of time before I started investigating other ideas!
